Noveller, Horseback, UnFact

When: Thu., Aug. 12, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $6

Desert Fires, the new LP by New York guitarist and sound sculptor Sarah Lipstate as Noveller, is a rarity in the world of drone and ambient music. Of its six tracks, only one, the sepia-toned guitar wash "Fades," breaks the seven-minute mark. Desert Fires, then, focuses as much on concision as it does on environment. The moods of Lipstate's music—the bleached anxiety of "Three Windows Facing Three Doors" or the circular confusion of "Same"—are merely temporary, but, thankfully, no less effective for it. Lipstate's oeuvre has developed steadily over the last five years, and she's shown no signs of exhausting her ideas. Horseback, Jenks Miller's vehicle for walking the line between drone and metal, opens. Also, Unfact. —Grayson Currin
