North Elementary, Owl Laws, Michael Holland

When: Fri., June 25, 10 p.m. 2010

Chapel Hill's premier subterranean venue, The Cave, promises a dynamic if oddly booked evening. The fullest sound belongs to local smart rock mainstay North Elementary. The quintet references such textural masterworks as A Ghost is Born and OK Computer with calm confidence. Michael Holland's gentle banjo swing brings a danceable sincerity. He, along with the Occoneechee String Band, play foundational Americana. It's a look in the rearview, sure, but the music gathers no dust in his hands. Owl Laws opens the show with minimalist pop: the bare essence of 20-something heartbreak radio. —Corbie Hill
