Noctomb, Gaul, Lesser Life, Shadows

When: Wed., Oct. 8, 9:30 p.m. 2014
Price: $5
The main draw here comes with Raleigh trio Noctomb, who have just issued their great debut EP, Obulus for Charon, on area imprint Primitive Ways. Ghoulish chants and feverish imprecations spill out over a tumescent rhythm section, all split by sharp riffs that start, stutter and then strut into the distance. It’s a distinctly hybridized affair, with metals black, death and stoner pouring into this attractive alloy. They’re backed by Gaul, a Florida-three piece that stretches thin black metal skin over a doom skeleton, and Chapel Hill grunters-and-grinders Lesser Life. Shadows—a rough-and-tumble, sub-thrash duo from Raleigh—open. —Grayson Haver Currin
