Nobunny or U.S Girls

When: Wed., Nov. 18, 8:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $10-$12

It's like a little Hopscotch sampler in November. Upstairs at Kings, the scantily clad and always masked Nobunny offers primal, playful garage rock, big on the simple pleasures of straight-ahead riffs and silly little jokes. Full of energy and oddity but addicting either way, Nobunny sets suggest a party where the room's narcotic preference is split between extreme uppers and psilocybin substances. The gleeful pummel of Flesh Wounds takes the opening slot. Despite Nobunny's image and shenanigans, the action in the Neptunes basement should be stranger still. During the last seven years, U.S. Girls, the recording project of Meg Remy, has slowly drifted through the surface of static and lo-fi distortion that once crowned her records for labels like Siltbreeze. Half Free, Remy's brilliant LP issued through 4AD earlier in September, finds her radiating like a Dirty Projector over noise-damaged dub ("Damn That Valley") and leaping into unabashed, modern rock-sized refrains ("Sed Knife"). The opening undercard of Asheville's krautrock-loving Nest Egg and synth-and-sequencer duo Bodykit is excellent, too. Buy tickets to both, and prepare for stairs. Nobunny: 8:30 p.m., $10$12. U.S. Girls: 9:30 p.m., $7. 14 W. Martin St., Raleigh, 919-833-1091, —Grayson Haver Currin
