Advertising is about getting people to say "yes," so how do you sell people on the word "no"? What follows in Pablo Larraín's film about the efforts of a Chilean advertising team to craft a message that will depose dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet is a fascinating study of process—a Latin Mad Men without the sex, sexism and booze. Over considerable objections raised by leftist ideologues, Saavedra rejects the initial strategy—moral appeals regarding the killings and torture and disappearances—in favor of the images and earworm jingles of modern advertising.
