No BS! Brass Band (Back Room)

When: Fri., Oct. 23, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $12

Hopscotch fans may remember No BS! Brass Band's wild, triumphant, festival-ending set at The Pour House in 2012. But fond memories likely favor the party and underestimate the innovative ensemble's creativity and virtuosity. Where most brass bands rarely ease up on the gas while playing their instruments, the classically trained members of No BS!—who've collaborated with the likes of Bon Iver and Feist—add subtleties and deal in dynamics as they dress up traditions with elements of rock and free jazz. Based off the cult martial arts film Five Deadly Venoms, "Ballad of the Eagle Claw" is a shining example: The multi-part piece begins with a lone, mournful trombone against the rustle of a shaken key ring. That yields to a somber chant, an eruption of horns and a frenzied saxophone solo before the trombone bellows like a foghorn. The idea that being complex and compelling are mutually exclusive has always been B.S. 9 p.m., $12, 300 E. Main St., Carrboro, 919-967-9053, —Spencer Griffith
