Re: “Live: Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson shake down 1999

Sunday's performance was my first time going to a Smashing Pumpkins concert. I have been listening to them for the better part of a decade as I am only 18 years old. After laughing thru the ridiculous first act, Cage, and mildly enjoying Manson's show (and it was quite certainly an entertaining act), it was nothing short of a dream to hear Corgan's voice opening with Cherub Rock. They started with most of the classics and a few off the new album, and then finished with some songs I was not familiar with. However, half-way thru the Smashing Pumpkins' set, a noticable amount of people began to leave. It took a while for the crowd to really cheer and applaud the Smashing Pumpkins like I expected. After one half hearted ovation, Corgan responded with, "gee..thanks." I felt really bad. I felt annoyed. I felt that an undeniable rock star like Billy Corgan deserved more. One can imagine Corgan is not going to do this much longer if that is how it is going to be. Maybe it was just Raleigh, maybe it was because it was 11 pm on a Sunday and people had work in the morning. I thought that Raleigh disrespected the legendary Smashing Pumpkins. I hope it does not deter Mr. Corgan from performing and I hope to see them again in a better city.
