Nikki Hill

When: Sat., Oct. 5, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $10
Nikki Hill was planted in Durham but blossomed in the St. Louis heartland. She adopted punk-rock kinks but smoothed out her sound with R&B marrow and wild blues affection. On her latest release, Here's Nikki Hill, she warns of her next great move: "I'm that storm rollin' up on you," she offers in a ripe roar, turning her lightning into badass flickers of soul singing. Backed by husband Matt Hill and a rock-minded rhythm section, Nikki returns to her hometown with added personality and polish, and possibly one or two more tattoos. —Eric Tullis
