Nightlight Benefit: Auxiliary House, Shithorse, King Kingfisher & His Royal White Pages

When: Sat., Oct. 30, 10 p.m. 2010
Price: $5

Perhaps the most noticeable trait of Chapel Hill's Trekky Records is the infectious enthusiasm that frames its work. Auxiliary House, the on-and-off band culled from Trekky's extended family, is a live representation of that vigor. Riding a wall of strings and brass with the ramshackle grandeur of Neutral Milk Hotel, the outfit provides an emotive backdrop for the label's talented songwriters. And it's a task to get all these people together as they move apart and move on to new projects, so witnessing Aux House's irresistible creative outpouring is a rare treat. Shit Horse is a live spectacle of a different sort. Singer Danny Mason, with a presence somewhere between suave soul man and manic street preacher, leads his band through bad-trip psychedelia and peppy garage antics that combine for a perfectly unsettling sound. The $5 bill starts at 10 p.m. with King Kingfisher & His Royal White Pages. —Jordan Lawrence
