Nick Lowe & His Band, Tift Merritt

When: Wed., May 2, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $35

Nick Lowe has enjoyed a renaissance as a sophisticated crooner after years as a snotty pub-rocker. After running with and producing Elvis Costello and other U.K. new wave acts that he helped presage, Lowe began to concentrate on his roots fascinations in the '90s. Now two decades in, he's become a highly respected elder statesman of Americana. He's always been a canny lyricist , which comes more to the fore in his soulful country songs' lower-key environs. His latest, The Old Magic, features several wondrous tracks, from the mordant rockabilly meditation of "Checkout Time" to the wryly self-deprecating '60s pop of "Sensitive Man." Tift Merritt opens the 8 p.m. show. —Chris Parker
