NHL All-Star Wide Open Celebration

When: Fri., Jan. 28 and Sat., Jan. 29 2011
Price: Free
The All-Stars are coming, and Raleigh has been preparing for this honor since the NHL announced the game's location last April. As the city gears up for Sunday's NHL All-Star game, there's a whole weekend's worth of promotional events. We're most excited about the NHL Fan Fair at the Convention Center. Attendees will be able to meet NHL vets, pose for a photo with the Stanley Cup and see how their own hockey skills stack up. The Fan Fair runs through Sunday. Fans also will be able to collect autographs from favorite Canes players: Aaron Ward is there on Friday, and Steven Stamkos, Jeff Skinner and Rod Brind'Amour will each sit for an hour on Saturday. City Plaza's ice rink will feature youth hockey exhibitions along with public skating. But there are also choices for those uninterested in the great Canadian game, like the Paperhand Puppet Parade, which will show off creations in a march down Fayetteville Street. For a traditional regional welcoming, Cabarrus Street will host a barbecue and beer festival. Today's events run 3–10 p.m., and Saturday's run 10 a.m.–7 p.m.; all of them are free. —Sarah Ewald
