Newcomers Scrabble Tournament

When: Sun., Jan. 15, 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. 2012
Phone: 919-699-9831
Price: $30

Calling all Facebook Scrabble junkies and "Words With" fiends (unau who you are). Do you find yourself anagramming road signs? ("Ped Xing ... pedestrian ... ah, DEEP STRAIN.") Does the mention of Hawaii or Vietnam bring to mind not tropical vacations but two-letter words for cindery lava (AA) and obsolete currency (XU)? Do you spend far too many a spare minute furrowing your brow at an electronic device, locked in orthographic combat with someone who isn't there?

This weekend, the Triangle (INTEGRAL, TANGLIER, ALTERING ... sorry) Scrabble Club would like to introduce you to the atavistic delights of word-freaking in the physical realm. In a special mini-tournament designed for newcomers (meaning those who haven't played in a tournament—all skill levels are welcome), you'll pit your vocabulary against live opponents in three practice games. It's a good chance to dip your toe into tournament-style play, with chess timers and word challenges. And it's for a good cause, as proceeds from the $30 entry fee go to the Pediatric Blood & Marrow Transplantation Program at Duke's Comprehensive Cancer Center. Play begins at noon. —Marc Maximov
