New: Holy Smokes BBQ in Raleigh, Emma's Fancy in Cary

Some brothers from Texas have opened a new BBQ spot in Raleigh, and guess what? They specialize in beef barbecue. Troy and Kyle Hogue's Holy Smokes BBQ (335 Tryon Road, Raleigh, 661-2271, offers local favorites plus St. Louis-style ribs, slow-smoked beef brisket and sides like creamed corn and baked beans. The cafeteria-style joint is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday.

A new dessert shop has opened in Cary, and all of the goodies are made from scratch from all-natural ingredients. W.B. "Buddy" Samples named Emma's Fancy (744-L E. Chatham St., Cary, 460-3163, after his mama. Tempt your taste buds with 15 varieties of cheesecake, among many other confections. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Andrea Reusing, chef and owner of Lantern (423 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, 969-8846,, will be giving a demo at the Durham Farmers' Market (501 Foster St., Durham, Saturday, June 30, as part of Eat Local Triangle Month through the Slow Food Triangle Convivium.

The Grape at Cameron Village (403 Daniels St., Raleigh, 833-2669, is adding a blue twist to its wine tasting Wednesday, July 4. There will be $10 flights of white and red wines, plus a surprise blue menu item. They are no longer serving Sunday brunches, by the way.

This month's eating contest at The Borough (317 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, 832-8433, is Monday, July 2, at 8 p.m., and bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches are the main show. As always, they take the first 10 to enter and this month the $5 cover goes to the SparkCon creative conference ( Owner Liz Masnik will be making the BLTs herself.

The Carrboro Farmers' Market (, 280-3326) hosts a pre-4th of July Market Tuesday, July 3, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the Town Commons. Same vendors as the Wednesday market, just a different day. There will be no Wednesday mid-week Market on July 4 due to the town's holiday activities.

XIOS Authentic Greek Restaurant (800 W. Williams St., Apex, 363-5288, has a few daily specials this summer: Tuesday, half-off bottled wines; Wednesday, "ladies night," 50 percent off female customers' entrées and desserts; Thursday, kids 12 and under eat free. There will be belly dancing the first and third Fridays and second and fourth Saturdays of each month at 7:30 p.m., and live music on the patio the second and fourth Fridays and first and third Saturdays of each month.

Starting June 28 and every Thursday through September, Heron's in the Umstead Hotel and Spa (5 SAS Campus Dr., 100 Woodland Pond, Cary, 447-4200, is offering an outdoor all-grilled menu featuring food from local farms. Chef Phil Evans will use, among other items, Elodie Farm goat cheese, Cane Creek Farm pork, produce from Jackson Farm, and served with it will be North Carolina wine and beer plus outdoor music.
