Parker and Otis opens

For those who have been mourning the loss of Fowler's in the Peabody Place complex near Brightleaf Square in downtown Durham, a phoenix has risen from the ashes in the form of Parker & Otis (112 S. Duke St., Durham, 683-3200,, a kitchen, cellar and pantry. Jennings Brody opened the new specialty foods store without a grand opening—more goods and menu items are trickling in as the weeks go on, and she hopes to be at full throttle within a month or so. Like Fowler's, there is wine, coffee, lunch items like paninis and salads, and kitschy candies. Unlike its predecessor, Parker & Otis offers much more in the way of confections and loads of candies. They also sell local basics like milk, eggs, cheese and breads. Open Monday-Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Zely & Ritz (301 Glenwood Ave., Suite 100, Raleigh, 828-0018, is hosting a California central coast wine dinner featuring several small, boutique wines Wednesday, June 20, at 7 p.m. Chef Sarig has prepared a special menu from local ingredients. Call for reservations.

La Residence (202 W. Rosemary St., Chapel Hill, 967-2506, is hosting a Mt. Eden wine dinner Wednesday, June 20. The social begins at 6:30 p.m. followed at 7 p.m. with a five-course meal with a pairing of wine for each course. $75 per person.

3CUPS (431 W. Franklin St., #15, Chapel Hill, 968-8993, will host a class on "Wines of the Italian Alps" Wednesday, June 20, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dan Fairris, a native of Missouri who now lives in Hillsborough, is the U.S. trade representative for the Chamber of Commerce in Alto Adige, Italy. This region is thought to be the best kept vino secret in Italia. The class is $20 and prepayment is required.

JuJuBe (201-L Raleigh Road, Glen Lennox Shopping Center, Chapel Hill, 960-0555, hosts a wine dinner pairing fresh summer white wines from France on Wednesday, June 20, at 7 p.m. for $55 per person, reservation only. Info: e-mail or call the Chapel Hill Wine Company at 968-1884.  

Margauxs Restaurant (8111-111 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, 846-9846, is having a lobster fest as part of its 15th anniversary celebration Thursday, June 21. There will be 3-, 5- and 10-pound Maine lobsters available. Reservations required.

The Durham Farmers' Market (501 Foster St., will feature Drew Smith and/or Andy Magowan, head chefs and owners of Piedmont (401 Foster St. Durham, 683-1213, as part of Eat Local Triangle, a month-long celebration supporting local food growers sponsored by Slow Food Triangle. They will be cooking at the market to demonstrate what can be done with farm fresh fare.
