New Familiars

When: Thu., Feb. 24, 10 p.m. 2011
Price: $7

Fans of The Band, the Avett Brothers and The Jayhawks will find plenty to love in the Appalachian roots rock of the New Familiars. Desperate howls harmonize on bluegrass-charged barn burners one moment, then sweet melodies and lonesome dobro cries grace jangly lovelorn laments the next. These high-energy troubadours transform unlikely tunes from Queen and Phil Collins into their own folky takes, along with a healthy selection of more earthy covers (Dylan, Gillian Welch and the Dead are favorites). It's a testament to the Charlotte quartet's own sharp songwriting that the originals don't pale in comparison. Pay a $7 cover at 10 p.m. —Spencer Griffith
