Neko Case, Karen Elson

When: Sat., Oct. 26, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $25-55
Making a name for herself during the twilight of alt-country, a restrictive and deceptive subgenre tag, Neko Case confounded genre traditionalists and twang-averse hipsters alike.

Blacklisted, from 2002, was a pop-skewing Nashville-tinged record with baroque production and undeniable hooks. It fortuitously arrived at the moment when "indie" no longer described a band's D.I.Y. status but rather a burgeoning demographic. Indie types are upwardly mobile proselytizers, so they pushed artists like Case to semi-mainstream status. (Her work with the New Pornographers helped, too.) On her gutsy new The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You, Case, now 43, seems intent to kick against the idea that her music could be construed as lifestyle pop. "Get the fuck away from me/ Why don't you ever shut up?" she demands. —Brandon Soderberg
