NC Symphony

When: Thu., Jan. 26, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $33-63

An exploration of modern tango flowers on two Triangle stages this week, as Argentinean bandoneón master Coco Trivisonno joins the North Carolina Symphony in its Passport miniseries. Trivisonno, from the group Forever Tango, has appeared in movies such as Batman Forever and on international stages loaded with the world's top-tier musicians, from opera's Placido Domingo to Latin rock producer and film composer Gustavo Santaolalla. This program, "Tango Nuevo," features classical composers who have been tango trailblazers—from the celebrated Astor Piazzolla, whose works, when first introduced, were considered blasphemous by many Argentineans, to Osvaldo Golijov, who carries that torch today. Dancing tango onstage to select pieces will be local dancers Karen Jaffe and Daniel Arredondo. Directed by Grant Llewellyn, the program repeats over three nights; catch it at UNC's Memorial Hall on Thursday, or at the Symphony's home in Raleigh's Meymandi Concert Hall on Friday and Saturday. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
