NC Symphony

When: Jan. 13-14, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $18-$48

This themed program from the state's symphony keys on Hungarian composers, so it's already rich with the Ravel rhapsody "Tzigane," Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra" and Kodály's dances. The key to this weekend's performances, though, is Petra Berényi, a Hungarian-born violist who, tonight, leads the symphony with her other specialty—the dulcimer-like cimbalom. A wonder of wires, tension and framing, the cimbalom possesses a wide range and billows of notes that make hearing it a mesmerizing experience. The symphony will play "Concertino Semplice for cimbalom and orchestra" by 20th-century Hungarian composer Kamilló Lendvay. The Symphony plays the same program at Memorial Hall in Chapel Hill on Thursday, Jan. 12. —Grayson Currin
