N.C. Symphony Summerfest: Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony

When: Sat., May 28, 7:30 p.m. 2016
Price: $30-$35
Summer symphony concerts are generally places for lighter fare, meant to accompany picnics and little kids cavorting. The first half of the N.C. Symphony’s first Summerfest concert offers just that with some boisterous Smetana and playful Wagner. But then things get more serious with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, a work almost operatic in scope, thanks to brooding chorales, aria-like melodies, and a whirling dance at the end. —Dan Ruccia
