Sir Edward Elgar was a whimsical fellow who hid a special musical theme within his most enduring composition, the "Enigma Variations." The legend goes that Elgar was noodling at the keyboard when his wife hollered from the other room that she liked the improvisation. He began playing variations on it, styling some after the work of other composer friends. The final piece presents a theme and 14 variations that provide affectionate musical and artistic portraits of Elgar's fin de siècle friends, with the added bonus of a thematic secret he took to his grave. See if you can crack Elgar's code when the N.C. Symphony plays the piece as part of a program featuring pianist Ingrid Fliter that also includes Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony and Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1.Chris Vitiello
