NC Symphony Classical Series: Yevgeny Sudbin Plays Rachmaninoff

When: Fri., Oct. 3, 8 p.m. and Sat., Oct. 4, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $18-$55
Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is concert pianist kryptonite. The Russian Romantic composer dedicated it to friend Josef Hofmann, who never had the courage to play it. The piece drove Geoffrey Rush to a mental breakdown in the movie Shine, though he got an Oscar in the deal. Acclaimed Russian-born pianist Yevgeny Sudbin has the chops, though, as he joins the North Carolina Symphony for a homeland program that also features works by Shostakovich. This is a chance to see superior skill meet technical difficulty. They reprise the performance on Saturday night. —Chris Vitiello
