N.C. Symphony: Beethoven's Violin Concerto

When: Fri., April 29, 8 p.m. and Sat., April 30, 8 p.m. 2016
Price: $18-$66
All classical music seems to, at some level, address Beethoven and his shadow. This concert makes that explicit, pairing the master’s violin concerto (ably performed by Noah Bendix-Balgley) with John Adams’s Absolute Jest, a concerto for string quartet. Adams takes shards of scherzos from late Beethoven works and reassembles them into a new work. Adams isn’t poking fun at Beethoven, but instead using him as a launching pad. —Dan Ruccia
