N.C. Symphony Also Sprach Zarathustra

When: Fri., Oct. 28, 8 p.m. and Sat., Oct. 29, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $50-$70

Plenty of people find emphasis on flash and debauchery at Halloween tiresome at best. For them, there are three chances to catch the N.C. Symphony's presentation of Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra, Thursday at UNC's Memorial Hall and Friday–Saturday at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh. It's an existentially terrifying and fantastically complex piece, more Cormac McCarthy than slasher film. This Nietzsche-inspired tone poem was written in two conflicting keys and ends unresolved. The idea is that human endeavor and the nature of the universe, respectively represented by these battling tonalities, are wholly incompatible. —Corbie Hill
