NC Sacred Harp Convention

When: Sat., March 3, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

The website for the North Carolina Sacred Harp Convention ( includes an interesting clause: "Singers and nonsingers welcome." The encouragement to beginners is clear, but if you know anything about Sacred Harp or shape-note singing, you know that one of its chief assets (and part of the reason it was both invented and survived into modernity) is that most anyone can transition from a nonsinger to singer in just a few minutes. Its notation is simple and intuitive, and its champions are apostles of sorts, willing and ready to let you in on its secrets before you've even asked. Perhaps the better offer of inclusion would have been: "The religious and non-religious are welcome." While this is indeed gospel music, the modal and amorphous manner of these tunes is wonderfully hypnotic, regardless of your feelings for the specific Lord in question. The free event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and includes a potluck. —Grayson Currin
