NC Opera: Madama Butterfly

When: Fri., Oct. 30, 8 p.m. and Sun., Nov. 1, 3 p.m. 2015

Lovers rarely have it easy in operas, but Puccini is particularly rough on his female lead in the tragedy Madama Butterfly.American naval lieutenant Pinkerton, stationed in Nagasaki, marries the smitten teenage geisha Cio-Cio-San and installs her in a house on the hill that overlooks the bay. He ships out with promises to return, so she waits dutifully, sustained by a passionate hope. When his ship finally does return to the bay, he brings only more sorrow with his wake. Puccini called Madama Butterfly his most expressive opera, which is something coming from the composer of La Bohème and Tosca. Maestro Timothy Myers conducts, while E. Loren Meeker directs versatile soprano Talise Trevigne in the title role for this fully staged production. Tenor Michael Brandenburg voices the cad. The opera reprises the performance in a 3 p.m. matinee Sunday, Nov. 1. 8 p.m. $19–$89, 2 E. South St., Raleigh, 919-792-3850, —Chris Vitiello
