NC Opera Company Open House

When: Mon., Jan. 14, 6 p.m. 2013

Quick, what's the first name that pops into your head when you think opera? There's a decent chance it's German composer Richard Wagner, whose epic cycle of four operas, The Ring, exemplified his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk or "total artwork" that helped feed the development of Modernism. The North Carolina Opera will present a concert evening of Wagner—including the complete first act of Die Walküre from The Ring—at Meymandi Hall in Raleigh on Jan. 27 in celebration of the composer's bicentennial year. Several great events run up to the performance, including this introduction to Wagner's work by N.C. Opera general director Eric Mitchko. Want to sound smart at the talk? Ask Mitchko what a "Wagner tuba" is. The free event begins at 6 p.m. Mitchko also appears at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 16 at Quail Ridge Books.—Chris Vitiello
