Natural Alliances

When: Aug. 11-Sept. 6 2015

FRANK GALLERY—Simultaneous opening receptions for two contrasting shows make FRANK worth checking out Friday night. Natural Alliances (Aug. 11Sept. 6) features minimalist works, in mediums including pencil, clay and silver wire, inspired by forms from the natural world. Ippy Patterson and curator Jean LeCluyse bring accomplished backgrounds in botanical illustration. Aggie Zed's sculptures include small ceramic figurines of people, animals and creatures in between. Alan Dehmer contributes gum bichromate prints, a process from the earliest days of photography. The archaic gesture carries over into Renaissance: A Book Arts Exhibition (Aug. 11Sept. 6), where Asheville's Book & Print Arts Collective, Raleigh's Triangle Book Arts and Chattanooga, Tennessee's The Open Press display artistic printing techniques from the Renaissance onward, in books, aquatints, etchings, lithographs, monotypes, woodcuts and more. In the context of the nature show, it's a reminder that the life force of printed matter is more elemental than abstract. After all, a book is just a tree where we write our dreams in carbon black. 6–9 p.m., free,

109 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill,
