Natalie Merchant

When: Tue., May 29, 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $28-79

Before shooting to solo success with her quintuple-platinum 1995 debut, Tigerlily, Natalie Merchant was the lead singer and chief lyricist of the cult favorite jangle-pop outfit 10,000 Maniacs for more than a decade. For her current tour, Merchant follows Ben Folds' lead as another alternative pop star gone symphonic, performing with the North Carolina Symphony under the direction of James Bagwell. Expect Merchant to draw heavily from Leave Your Sleep, her folksy 2010 concept album inspired by centuries-old children's poetry. Selections from her back catalog and a few new songs likely will infiltrate the set list. Tickets run $28–$79 for the 7:30 p.m. performance. —Spencer Griffith
