Napoleon Wright II, Tab-One

When: Fri., Nov. 22, 9:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $5
We should care a lot about Napoleon Wright II. The guy is a gifted composer and emcee. But somehow, he's tucked himself so deep into Triangle hip-hop that he's largely known for a bunch of cute-tuned raps that often get buried beneath louder stuff. Maybe his new LP, The Napoleon Complex, will change that. The Common-inspired instrumental "Drifting on a Memory" is a perfect starting point. From there, "You Are the Sun" teams him with Tanya Morgan emcee Von Pea, while "What I Need" is soaked in drippy soul bap. Wright simply raps and produces; he'll never advertise, but his sounds growl plenty. —Eric Tullis
