Naima Coster

When: Mon., Jan. 22, 7 p.m. 2018

Wake Forest University writing professor Naima Coster, who grew up in Brooklyn, unveils Halsey Street, her debut novel, at the Regulator. The novel is a family saga set against the backdrop of Bed-Stuy, a gentrifying neighborhood in Brooklyn. Coster interweaves the perspectives of Penelope, an unsuccessful artist returning home to care for her ill father, and her mother, Mirella, who has departed for her home country of the Dominican Republic. Shifting back and forth in time to tell both women's stories, Halsey Street is already earning acclaim for its look into the braiding of art and life. Kirkus Reviews calls it "absorbing and alive, the kind of novel that swallows you whole." People says it's "a masterful tale of family failures and forgiveness." Get in early on what may be one of the year's first big critical hits with this reading and signing. —Zack Smith
