Myrna Bascuñan & Claudia López Bascuñan

When: Sun., May 12, 1 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

This Mother's Day edition of PineCone's Music of the Carolinas series features Chilean mother-daughter duo Myrna Bascuñan and Claudia López Bascuñan, who now reside in Chapel Hill after arriving stateside as political refugees from Chile. They perform gorgeous folk songs addressing the oppression that brought them here. The pair will also share tales in English and Spanish; beyond her musical background and a career teaching English, Myrna is an experienced storyteller, while Claudia sings with the whimsical troupe Paperhand Puppet Intervention. Free tickets are distributed at 2 p.m. for the Bascuñans' 3 p.m. performance, which is preceded at 1 p.m. by a set of big-band tunes from the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble. —Spencer Griffith
