MuteMath, Civil Twilight

When: Tue., Oct. 9, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $23-25

Mutemath is known as much for its inventive music videos as for its incredibly energetic live performances. Indeed, the dynamic New Orleans quartet has upstaged its fair share of headlining tour mates, but there's substance behind the flashy style: Using U2's anthemic grandeur and Radiohead's atmospheric textures as a springboard, the melodic alt-rockers experiment with commercial forms, producing largely successful results. Last year's Odd Soul finds skittering electronics nestled alongside guitar crunch and Latin percussion workouts. Somehow, none of it seems out of place. South African four-piece Civil Twilight pushes similar influences in a more melodramatic direction. —Spencer Griffith
