Boo Hanks is 83 years young. The Virgilina, Va., homesteader has been playing blues all his life, though he's only just getting started on his music career. At 79, Hanks recorded his first album, Pickin' Low Cotton, for the Music Maker Relief Foundation. Since that sterling debut, he's shared his Piedmont blues in classrooms at UNC, with folks at the Lincoln Center in Washington, for crowds in Belgium and at all manner of spots in between.—Ashley Melzer
