With a tool kit that included standup bass, mandolin and tenor banjo, Barleycorn & Rye founders Dan Ouimet and Michael Granatosky set out to stir up Irish folk and Americana. Recruiting five-string banjoist and guitarist Al Segars and guitarist Dave Deharde helped flesh out their jangling, welcome-to-the party sound. The title of their 2013 debut, The Rowdy Sessions, aptly summarizes their approach to performing. —Grant Britt
