Music of Southern Composers: Marlissa Hudson and David Heid

When: Sun., Sept. 20, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: free
In this recital, Duke alumna and rising star soprano Marlissa Hudson asks what makes classical music from the southern United States unique. Her answer draws on a diverse group of composers: Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Ward has two songs; the pioneering African-American composer William Grant Still has a song cycle; there’s a song each by two of Still’s equally groundbreaking contemporaries, Florence Price and Undine Smith Moore; and a one-person opera by Jake Heggie. —Dan Ruccia
