Music in the Gardens series with Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba

When: Wed., June 26, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $10-12, free for 12 & under

Africa and North Carolina are connected by an ocean and the turbulent sea changes of history. The Senegal/Carrboro collective Kaira Ba has lived and performed on both sides of the Atlantic, blending their expertise and journeys of discovery into a uniquely fierce, refreshingly modern expression of ancient Manding culture with a Tar Heel flair. Cissokho, an ancestral griot with a rebellious streak, plays kora and sings with commanding passion. His honed ensemble roars on the fuel of hypnotic guitar licks, undulating dance grooves and fiery rhythm breaks. Bathed in the consciousness of musical connection, Kaira Ba thinks outside the box, then turns thought boxes into resonators. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
