Music in the Gardens series with David Wax Museum

When: Wed., June 12, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $10-12, free for 12 & under

Adding south-of-the-border flair to its folk-rock fashions, the David Wax Museum crafts lush, largely sunny tunes marked by jaunty, syncopated rhythms and radiant co-ed harmonies. Wax—who plays the guitar-like jarana—should feel at home at Duke after finishing college at Harvard, where he studied Latin American history and literature while traveling to and working in Mexico. His chief co-conspirator, Suz Slezak, uses the quijada—a donkey's jawbone—for percussion, while also adding accordion, fiddle and keys. Accompanying them on tour are bassist Greg Glassman and drummer Philip Mayer. —Spencer Griffith
