MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE, RALEIGH

FRIDAY, FEB. 13–SUNDAY, MAR. 1

It's one of the older gimmicks in the contemporary Shakespeare playbook: Relocate a production to a different country, time or even planet, as one group did with an outer-space Macbeth a few years after the release of Star Wars. But for his debut Raleigh Little Theatre production, new artistic director Patrick Torres has a compelling reason to stage Much Ado in 1945, just after World War II: "The gender politics and social codes of the time really mirror Shakespeare's age," he says. "If you look at it through the lens of [leading character] Beatrice, she's this Katharine Hepburn character, challenging gender norms. With Benedick and the men gone off to war, she's been playing the role of the man of the house. When they come back, that threatens her feelings of individuality and power." Lucius Robinson and Katherine Barron negotiate the politics of romance at Sutton Theatre. 8 p.m. Thurs.Sat.; 3 p.m. Sun., $13$22, 301 Pogue St., Raleigh,
