Movies in the Park

When: Fri., Aug. 20, 8:30 p.m. 2010
Price: Donations accepted
As the popularity of 3-D reaches its highest peak since the 1950s—to the extent that films made in regular 2-D are being awkwardly retrofitted to sell more expensive tickets—take some solace in the "FAKE 3-D" offered by Durham Cinematheque. We're not sure what it is, but people are encouraged to bring funny glasses. The program, "Winter Fun Time and Safety," features a variety of old films about "snow and ice, snow skiing and ice skating, igloo building and avalanche dog training." The films boast such luminaries as Robert Flaherty, Charles Chaplin and Sergei Eisenstein behind the camera. Also, there will be commercials for old lawnmowers. We're as confused as you are. The free event (donations are accepted) starts at 8:30 p.m., though patrons are encouraged to arrive early for the "musical prelude." Contact or visit —Zack Smith
