MOUNT MORIAH

THE PINHOOK, DURHAM | FRIDAY, OCT. 9

It's been a year or so since Mount Moriah's last show, as the trio has been preparing its full-length follow-up to 2013's Miracle Temple. But the band returns to both stage and shelves this weekend with the release of a new, three-song 7-inch on Merge. "Calvander," the lead track, offers yet another marvel in the Mount Moriah catalog of galvanized alt-country. Heather McEntire's powerful voice leads the band through a mild groove, at once blending the members' personal backgrounds into country and rock. Horns gild the song, making it sound like a tantalizing tease of what the band might deliver with its next full-length. We shouldn't have to wait another year before we celebrate that, but if so, at least you have Mount Moriah's mastery of raw, emotional songwriting on two LPs and this little new platter. The exquisite singer-songwriter Skylar Gudasz opens. 9 p.m., $10, 117 W. Main St., Durham, 919-667-1100, www.thepinhook.com. —Allison Hussey
