Morris Day and The Time, Sheila E.

With his fleet dance moves and trademark cackle, Morris Day is all but inseparable from the debonair egomaniac he played opposite Prince in Purple Rain and Graffiti Bridge. His shtick was cartoon-like, but as leader of The Time, Day had a hand in shaping the Minneapolis pop-funk sound of the early 1980s. Citing the need for artistic freedom, he went solo in 1985 but never moved beyond that sound and persona. You can expect his longtime “valet,” comic sidekick Jerome Benton, to be on hand to proffer Mr. Day a mirror for pompadour adjustment. Opener Sheila E. shares a similar association with Prince, but while the headliner is preserved in his zoot-suited amber, the percussion phenom has never stopped evolving. Born into one of Latin music’s royal families, she had collaborated with jazz and soul legends before meeting Prince and trying pop stardom on for size. Crucially, though, it was the Purple One who convinced her to sing. —David Klein
