Moonrise Kingdom

When: Fri., Aug. 16, 8:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $5

It's 1965 on the fictional New England island of New Penzance. Sam, a 12-year-old orphan attending a Khaki Scout summer camp, and Suzy, an introverted girl with two attorneys for parents, decide to run away together. Its focus on white middle-class dysfunction and its oddball heroes mean we're in typical Wes Anderson territory, but here his cinematic affectations perfectly belie the film's sweetness and deadpan humor. Listening to Sam and Suzy speaking with unembarrassed honesty about wetting the bed and being considered "problem children," you wonder why they're in such a hurry to grow up, when it's the bickering adults who are the dysfunctinonal ones. Moonrise Kingdom is part-adventure story and part-handholding, heart-achy 'tween love story. —Emma D. Miller
