Moon Duo, Birds of Avalon

When: Sun., Oct. 8, 9 p.m. 2017
Price: $12-$14

Unlike many bands on the strange and frightening side of the current neo-psych landscape, the stalwart Sacred Bones band Moon Duo seems content to do what it does best: bliss out. Every song on May's Occult Architecture Vol II evokes words you might associate with a peaceful afternoon hiking in a deep forest—meditative, comforting, and deeply sensuous. The expansive mood is apparent right from the jump; opener "New Dawn" feels like it was sculpted from rushing water with its whirling guitars and gushing vocals. While countless modern shoegaze and psych acts attempt this style and curl off into ambient make-out music, Moon Duo instead cycles in a gentle barrage of exploratory elements to keep the illusion intact. If you take your psychedelic music hypnotic and textural, this one's for you. It may not throw in too many left turns, but as glorious escapism, there's no beating it. With Birds of Avalon. —David Ford Smith
