Animation, Comedy

Behold this rare cinematic creature: a prequel nobody asked for that turns out to be a godsend. Someone at Disney or Pixar thought it would be a good idea to make an origin story for the characters from the quirky 2001 comedy Monsters, Inc. Pixar ran with the idea and made an irresistible computer-animated romp of it. That one-eyed little ball of greenness Mike Wazowski (the forever-hammy Billy Crystal), a freshman trying to pass the elite Scare Program, butts heads with his future best friend James "Sulley" Sullivan (John Goodman), a BMOC coasting on his effortlessly beastly ways. Their heated rivalry gets them kicked out of the program, forcing them to compete in the school's "Scare Games" to get back in. To compete, they have to join a fraternity of monster freaks and geeks. Yes, this is basically Disney/Pixar's Revenge of the Nerds—but the filmmakers spin comic gold out of that familiar premise.
