Mono, Chris Brokaw

When: Tue., Oct. 23, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $11-13

For the past decade, the Japanese quartet Mono has treated the word "pretty" like axiom, gospel and grail. Together, guitars, strings and a patient rhythm section created some of the grandest arches on this side of rock music, the sky seemingly opening in deference to the band's occasional majesty. They've refused to change the pattern, though, only augmenting or trimming it to fit the needs of a specific context. That complacence makes Mono pay on this year's five-song, tedious and flaccid LP For My Parents. The sheer post-rock pugnacity of those early releases and performances is subsumed by maudlin classicism. Those radiant, tremolo guitars are still there, but they now float against hot-air strings, missing the band's former rock factor dearly, like a kite with its string cut on a windy shore. Codeine's Chris Brokaw opens at 9 p.m. —Grayson Currin
