Monk Songbook: Chris Pattishall, Ernest Turner, Jeb Patton, Ethan Iverson, Orrin Evans

When: Sat., Oct. 21, 1 p.m. and Sun., Oct. 22, 1 p.m. 2017
Price: Free

The mission of these two MONK@100 shows is simple: make sure all the sixty-plus compositions that Thelonious Monk wrote across his lifetime are performed at least once during the festival. Of the five featured pianists, three boast Durham connections: Chris Pattishall grew up here before moving to New York; Jeb Patton went to Duke and worked with Monk sideman Paul Jeffrey; and Ernest Turner is a centerpiece of the Durham jazz scene. They're joined by festival cocurator (and former member of The Bad Plus) Ethan Iverson and the great Orrin Evans. The format is a kind of round robin: one pianist will play a Monk tune solo.Another will join for a piano duo. Then, the new pianist will play a solo. Yet another will join for a duo. And so on. Sparks should fly as all these dynamos collide, and the duo format will let them venture deep into Monk's most complicated musical waters. —Dan Ruccia
