Thanks to their quarter-century of longevity and the wider popularity of indie rock during the last decade, Modest Mouse are now approaching classic-rock status. To wit, last year, they issued deluxe editions of their first two albums and early singles, complete with unreleased material—the sign of an aging band emptying its archives in exchange for new interest. They've borrowed a member of the Smiths as a full-time guitarist, tried crazy tricks like collaborating with Outkast's Big Boi and cycled through band members until only one-third of the current lineup played on those recently revived LPs. By now, "Float On" has aged into innocuousness, so it's a grocery-store Muzak staple. But for the last three months, Modest Mouse have also eased out teases of their first LP in eight years, Strangers to Ourselves. Despite the lag and the lineup toggles, they sound true to form, with irascible and verbose frontman Modest Mouse leading his band along a zigzagging trail between pop-rock and post-punk. None of the five glimpses so far has stunned in the way of their aging best, but this is a band with one of the richest catalogues among all their contemporaries, playing their last show before their return record lands. It seems unlikely they'll reappear soon. —Grayson Haver Currin
