The one-hit-wonder label implies a lightweight status that doesn't always apply. It certainly doesn't fit British new wavers Modern English, who are nevertheless stuck with it. A glance at Spotify, for instance, suggests that six of Modern English's top 10 songs are "I Melt With You," including the 7-inch mix, a re-recorded version, a misspelled version and a live take. Ubiquitous in advertisements, the song even became the title of a 2011 movie by the director of Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" video.

Modern English, who began in Colchester as The Lepers in 1979, are not well represented by the bubbly, synth-sleek confection with which they're pegged. They were in fact a 4AD band deeply enamored of darkness. But make one buzzy little single that ends up on the Valley Girl soundtrack, and poof: You're a one-hit wonder, a staple in mail-order compilations, sandwiched between Kajagoogoo and Naked Eyes. Their non-"I Melt With You" songs deliver a solid, dark new wave kick, more likely to give you a chill than to induce melting. In the opening slot, locals I Was Totally Destroying It bring sunny, sinewy indie rock wrough t from sumptuous pop hooks. Perhaps they'll break out their ripping cover of "In a Big Country" for the occasion. —David Klein
