Mitski, Fear of Men, Weaves

When: Wed., Nov. 16, 8 p.m. 2016
Price: $15

Mitski's fourth album, Puberty 2, is a leap forward for the twenty-six-year-old singer-songwriter. The sounds surrounding her take-no-bullshit wail are more sumptuous, with blooming synths and anthemic churn brought into the mix. Meanwhile, her lyrics describe the slings and arrows that come with outsider status, playing just-elaborate-enough metaphors against startlingly blunt observations. On "I Bet On Losing Dogs," she compares looking into the eyes of canine also-rans with a sexual partner "looking in my eyes when I cum," while "Dan the Dancer" spins a yarn about a man hanging off a cliff who gets the chance to connect to a person, not a mass of solid rock. With the controlled expression of classical training, Mitski's voice ties it all together, making her flights of fury more bracing. Fear of Men and Weaves open. —Maura Johnston
