Missy Raines & the New Hip, The Outliers

When: Thu., Jan. 23, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $8-$10

The title track of New Frontier, the debut album by bassist Missy Raines and her backing trio, The New Hip, was actually written by Nashville multi-instrumentalist Zach Bevill. But the number serves as a credo for this moment in the career of Raines, an award-winning bluegrass instrumentalist now taking her turn as the velvet-voiced frontwoman of her own folk-rock band. "I'm looking for an exit/Can someone show me to the door," Raines offers against a gauze of cooed harmonies and sawtooth guitar, her quick-picking past reflected only by a gentle mandolin trot. New Frontier is a worthy point of departure, with performances that suggest a less interior and masculine version of the heartland indie fare made in recent years by the likes of Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes. Raines is an expert musician, yes, but there's a wonderful and innocent wanderlust to her singing. It's as though this new role were a complex math problem, and we get to watch her tease out the solution in real time. Onstage, she delivers these songs with aplomb and energy that proudly reflect her former frontier, bouncing at centerstage with a bass bigger than her. —Grayson Haver Currin
